What are the Physical Features of Batik Fabric?

Batik fabric is considered artistic because it uses different types of pre-boiled threads. Also, various kinds of designs can be made using this fabric. Some common types of threads used are silk and cotton.

Batik fabric has been popular for centuries because of its beautiful and vibrant patterns and colors. But certain physical features excite people to spend on this fabric type.  In this post, we will discuss these physical features.

Soft- People with skin problems usually prefer batik fabric because it is soft and safe for sensitive skin.  But this doesn't apply to all. The softness of the fabric depends on the dyeing process. You might find some stiff batik fabric in the market.

Breathable- Batik fabric, especially cotton batik fabric, is quite breathable. The fabric is breathable but depends on the types of threads used.  Breathability means enough air is allowed to pass inside, making you comfortable. This comfort lets you wear dresses made of batik fabric for longer.

Heat-absorbent- Batik fabric effectively absorbs heat, but the absorption level depends on the material used to manufacture it. Silk and cotton batik fabric are two common options that nicely regulate the temperature.  They absorb heat and make you comfortable.

Stretchable - It's said that stretchable fabrics are good, but this isn't true in the case of batik fabric. The stretch of the fabric is low, or there is no stretch. It's because batik is a designer fabric, and designer materials are not made to be stretchy.

Water-absorbent- Compared to other batik fabric forms, the water absorption rate of the cotton batik fabric is very high. After cotton comes the silk batik fabric.  Silk absorbs moisture but not as fast as cotton.

Transparent- What people don't prefer in dress material is transparency. They want a fabric with layers so that nothing is visible. Batik fabric solves this problem as it isn't usually transparent. The transparency problem only comes with delicate silk batik, which is sometimes a little transparent.

Shrinkage- Shrinkage of batik fabric depends on the material type. If you are using cotton batik fabric, it can shrink 2 to 5% after the first few washes.  Shrinking is common in all kinds of cotton fabric, regardless of its quality. On the other hand, silk and rayon batiks don't shrink.

Durable- If quality materials are used for making the batik fabric, it is durable. You can use items made of this fabric for a long time with no or little maintenance. The fabric's color fades beautifully with every wash, giving it a vintage look.

Color retention- Wax-resistant dyes are used to make batik fabric.  The use of these dyes gives color retention ability to the batik fabric. Even cotton batik fabric can retain colors. But, if the fabric or items made using the fabric are exposed to direct sunlight and harsh detergent, the color fades faster.

Conclusion

The physical features of batik fabric are beyond expectation. So, using it for sewing different household items and dresses is a great idea.
